Some don’t contain the ingredients listed on their labels, while other do contain the ingredients but in lower, less significant amounts. In short, you have to be careful when choosing the supplements you take.

The following are tips that can help you choose a good health supplement product:

Scan the label.

Checking the label is always your first step because it’s the window to what lies inside. It offers you a picture of the supplement’s quality.

Look for certification.

First and foremost, see if you can find any “USP”or United States Pharmacopeia written somewhere. Now under this, you should find “GNP” or Good Manufacturing Practices. If a product is both USP and GNP-certified, it means that it has satisfied FDA regulations and has been tested bottle to bottle for consistency.

Look at the price.

Usually, cost and quality are directly proportional to each other, though the cheapest is still not automatically the best. Certification obviously costs companies money, and there are supplement manufacturers that would not want to make such an investment. One reason a higher-quality product is more expensive is that the manufacturer spent more money on quality control processes and equipment. But of course, while the cheapest isn’t always the best you can find, neither is the priciest.

Find out the other ingredients.

A high quality supplement product will have a maximum of five items on its ingredient list. If there’s more, be careful. In addition, avoid anything that has colors, dyes, artificial flavors and added sugars.

Check for potential allergens.

Many people are allergic to foods like wheat, seafood, dairy and peanuts. High quality supplement products will have a list of the allergens that they don’t contain.

Pick a good source.

Aside from the product itself, you should also take time to assess the quality of the source. For example, if you’re buying online, do some research on the website before placing your order. Go through customer reviews,but to ensure credibility, don’t veer away from reputable consumer websites. If you’re buying offline, pick a store that will probably have the freshest authentic products. There might be a difference between a product bought from a well-known health shop, and one from a quaint furniture shop that also sells health supplements on the side.

Finally, don’t hesitate to spend time learning about the different products available to you, and the best places where you can get them. Compare prices but never choose based on price alone.
